Blessed Assurance

The time I spend on the road is never wasted. I may very likely pout upon hitting a traffic jam - but the CDs I play in my car will eventually keep me singing and joyful. Thank God for them!

Was driving home after language studies this evening - and the hymnal CD I was listening to played Frances J. Crosby's (or better known as the late Fanny Crosby) "Blessed Assurance". I replayed the song after it ended, absolutely moved. The tune's pretty simple; if you either didn't know the words or have played merely the tune repeatedly (and if you're anything like me) you would be bored! :P The words, however, are so poignant that even the pauses seem rich - as one is given a little time to reflect on framing lines. I have sung "Blessed Assurance" many times, since I learned it in Every Nation Dublin - more than half a decade ago - but it still never fails to refresh my hope in Christ whenever I sing it today. A dear brother once told me, "The last 2 lines of the first verse pretty much sums up what it means to be a Christian."

Today, I sang along to the song on my hymnal CD and found tears welling up in my eyes. Indeed my heart was filled with awe at the remembrance of God's goodness and lost in His love.

  1. Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!
    Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine!
    Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
    Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.
    • Refrain:
      This is my story, this is my song,
      Praising my Savior all the day long;
      This is my story, this is my song,
      Praising my Savior all the day long.
  2. Perfect submission, perfect delight,
    Visions of rapture now burst on my sight;
    Angels, descending, bring from above
    Echoes of mercy, whispers of love.
  3. Perfect submission, all is at rest,
    I in my Savior am happy and blest,
    Watching and waiting, looking above,
    Filled with His goodness, lost in His love.

Ah....thank you so much for this post, Grace. I LOVE that song. It's one of my dad's favorite songs, too. He sings it in Korean though. :-)
