A guitar for a brother

A revised blog-post ~

Blogger's note: I worked on this blog-post while I was stuck in a mighty traffic jam on my way home from work. The jam was due to a bad storm in Penang. The wind was crazy. Trees and structures were falling across the road, behind and in front, sometimes trapping vehicles underneath - at least where I was - and leaves, branches and debris were everywhere. I was so terrified that I decided that I'd turn my attention to something warm and soothing - and thus, the blog-post. Thanking God that I am home, safe and sound. Praying that nobody will get hurt out there.

My acoustic guitar has a name.

6 years ago, a dear brother, Kean Yew, named it after the legendary sword of King Arthur - Excalibur.

KY doted on Excalibur, he did. Because my guitar skills were not stellar and KY gelled better with Excalibur.... I let him borrow Excalibur quite often. Excalibur would turn up at our Christian Fellowship meetings whenever KY was the guitarist for worship.

KY played well. He was in fact one of the best guitarists I have worked with in my years of worship leading - even though he was pretty new to everything. I enjoyed working with him, not only because of his skills, but also because he had great attitude. He was always teachable at heart, faithful, diligent, God-fearing... and he treated Excalibur with great care. It also helped that he was a close friend. I learned a lot while working with him.

Eventually, some of us decided that we would get him a guitar for his birthday and surprise him.

The process of acquiring the guitar was quite memorable. What I enjoyed most was our team effort. Everyone was excited and passionate about the surprise. Money was collected (although we didn't have much in the beginning, somehow God made the amount just right) and other preparations were made - including planning a party. Subsequently, Edmond and I visited a few music shops one evening - guitar-hunting.

We finally got KY a Haggai from Yamaha. A sturdy guitar, like Excalibur.

Why Haggai? I don't know. KY said that his birthday present looked like a Haggai to him. And so, he named his new treasure "Haggai".

The End.
