Some things I remember about high school

Stumbled upon a very old blog-post of mine at a different blog address. Somehow, I enjoyed reading it.

"Some things I remember about high-school (I attended a public school) -

1. We, girls (especially the prefects) were to abstain from wearing in our hair any other colour but black. I can't even remember if blue was permitted... but, well, I bought loads of black hair-ties, hair-bands, hair-clips and etcetera just for school. Mom protested: "Going for funeral meh??? Everything hak-mak-mak..."

2. The prefects had to carry nail-clippers in our pockets, for the sake of trimming the long fingernails of "rebellious people". Our own nails would be inspected every Monday. I had a hole in my pocket, thanks to the nail clipper. I must have been very kind to the "rebellious people" - I never cut anybody's nails with my nail clipper. But yeah, imagine cutting someone else's grubby nails and having to put the clipper back into your pocket after that. Ewwww and double ewww.

3. We were banned from bringing correction pens (liquid paper) to school, but that didn't prevent us from bringing them. *Grin* We hid them up in the curtains every time we knew that there was going to be a spot-check. (Children, please don't learn from us.)

4. I hated the canteen, because of the flies - big flies. Humongous flies, in fact - zooming in whenever and wherever there was food and brushing past our faces oh so gracefully. I skipped recess for many years. I don't think that the flies missed me much anyway.

5. We had to stand up each time a teacher entered the class - and say in unison (in a sing-song manner too), "Selamat sejahtera, cikgu..." (Translated: Peace be unto you, teacher.) After a while, the greeting lost all meaning. Sadly.

6. The toilets were in such a sad state, that I avoided using them for more than a year. How? By not drinking water while I was in school. How unhealthy.

7. The Ravi's Roti Canai shop opposite our area was a popular lepak spot for students. Oh yes, I am not that goody. I used to lepak. (Lepak = loiter) I can't say that I've completely ditched lepak-ing completely. Perhaps even, my lepak is so much more sophisticated now - that it has actually become justifiable. Just perhaps.

8. They used to nickname the prefects P-I-Gs - the acronym for "Prefects In Green" because we wore dark green blazers, light green shirts and medium green ties with our white skirts/trousers and black shoes. Not the most convenient colour scheme for us - especially for girls entering puberty. Obvious reasons. Duh..."

What school did you go to? I thought that all uniforms were turquoise and white...mine were. :-)

Subang Utama. Well, they wore turquoise and white too... but the prefects dressed differently. :)
