Elephant

Today, there was a documentary on elephants on the Discovery Channel.

Sophie was watching it with me while waiting for her grandma to serve lunch. Since the elephant is one of my favourite animals, I was very happy that Sophie was watching the programme (although I am always nervous whenever my baby watches TV - you know, all they say about "no screen-time for children under 2 years old").

There was a sound of whirring blades in the background while my mother-in-law had a variety of ingredients turning into a lumpy mush in our food blender - chicken drumstick, mushrooms, purple carrot, dates, wolfberry seeds and watercress. They hailed from the soup that had been cooking in the slow-cooker the whole morning. We waited in anticipation for the product of grandma's labour.

My MIL came into the living room area just in time to see a baby elephant tailing his mother. With my eyes still glued to the screen, I said, "Wow, the mother elephant breast-feeds her baby for two years..."

I turned to see a sheepish smile on MIL's face. She showed me Sophie's lunch. It was exactly the colour of the muddy elephants we had seen on TV. Brown-grey.

Sophie chowed down her lunch with a half-terrified look on her little face. She kept tapping her chest with one hand (her sign for "I'm afraid" or "This is scary") all throughout lunch.

Perhaps she thought that it was mashed elephant that she was eating. Oops.
