While John the Baptist seemed to be restless and confused about the identity of Jesus, whose projects were mainly humanitarian in nature rather than political (the Jews were anticipating deliverance from Roman domination in Israel), Jesus still eulogized him as God's faithful prophet - one who had borne witness to Jesus and preached repentance, being true to his calling.
I am reminded, in context of the Church's evolving biblical interpretation, doctrine and teachings to diverse influences, that a God-fearing Christian who aspires to serve Him well should keep main things main. Naturally, seemingly miraculous events and things like health-and-wealth gospel will often be a trial of faith rather than a support for it; and there is no end to the discussions we can have over them, even the most charitable ones. However, Christ has died, Christ is risen and Christ will come again. Seeking and preaching His Kingdom needs to be central to the Christian lifestyle and discipleship. Will Jesus bear witness to us as His faithful witnesses when He returns? In fulfilling his commission, John the Baptist was so steadfast and sober that it pleased Jesus to commend him despite his faith struggles. I pray that it might be the same for us.
